A survey of Greek and Roman Archaeology with particular reference to art:-
Historical parameters to provide the historical backdrop for the main contents of the study-unit.
Basic notions of Greek and Roman Architecture: ground plans and elevations (including orders) of public buildings; housing.
Overview of Greek painted pottery and large-scale painting.
Overview of Greek sculpture. Discussion in some detail of artistic personalities and individual works.
Overview of Roman sculpture: origins and development of portraiture and historical relief.

To guide students through the overabundance of literature on the subject.
To provide them with basic knowledge of Greek and Roman architecture.
To provide them with a sequential overview of Greek painting on pottery.
To provide them with a sequential overview of Greek sculpture.
To provide them with a sequential overview of Roman sculpture.
Learning Outcomes
1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Place the development of Greek and Roman art in their historical context;
2. Compare and contrast the basic elements of Greek and Roman architecture;
3. Understand the main lines of development of Greek vase painting;
4. Understand the main lines of artistic developments of Greek sculpture in terms of iconography and style;
5. Identify the origins of Roman sculpture and understand the main lines of development of Roman portraiture and historical relief.
2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Identify the orders of Greek and Roman architecture;
2. Identify individual Greek and Roman works of art and place them in their chronological sequence from their stylistic and iconographic characteristics;
